Team 22 Yards had a special guest at their Navami morning shoot. Sourav Ganguly. Dada dropped by at the Barisha Players Corner pandal in his para for a quick meet-and-greet with the film’s cast and crew, which includes television heart-throb Barun Sobti. “I am a cricket fanatic and I am his fan. He was very sweet and accommodating and made sure everybody was comfortable,” Barun told t2. So, what did they talk about? “It was pretty loud for a conversation. Barun with a dhunuchi at the pandal. “It was great… the music, the people, big idols… the dhunuchi was pretty hot, but it was smelling really nice,” he smiled.

22 Yards director Mitali Ghoshal (left) was “sceptical” whether she’d be able to pull off a Durga Puja shoot. “It was challenging. I am thankful to both Dada and the Kalighat Milan Samiti (located in Mamata Banerjee’s neighbourhood, where they shot an evening sequence) puja organisers for helping us a lot. Ron (Barun’s character in the film) is not in the best of moods — the sequences we shot capture him in the pandals, trying to relive his childhood Puja days,” said Mitali. 22 Yards, in which Barun plays a sports agent, is produced by MS Productions.

Barun, who took time out from the shooting schedule of Mitali Ghoshal's 22 Yards, looked at home at the Barisha Players' Corner pandal (this is Sourav Ganguly's para puja), where the crew had pitched their cameras. He spoke to us about his first Durga Puja in Kolkata — and chatting with Dada. Excerpts:










How's your first Durga Puja in Kolkata?
Achchha lag raha hai yaar. It's raining and the weather is nice. This is my first time and it's overwhelming. We went pandal-hopping yesterday to Ballygunge Cultural and other places.

What did Sourav tell you when he met you at his para puja?
This is the first time I met him. We first met during Ashtami's Sandhi Puja. Whenever he comes out, the activity level goes up and the dhakis start playing loudly, so we couldn't talk much. But he is a very nice person. He asked me a couple of times if this was the first time I was seeing Durga Puja and when I said yes, he seemed pretty proud of his own culture.

You are playing a cricket agent in 22 Yards. And now, your favourite cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has announced his retirement. Your feelings?
The time when we would switch off the TV after Tendulkar got out has gone... but it's his career and his choice. Obviously, he is a very wise man. I will miss watching him bat.

Tell us about this particular scene which you are shooting in the pandals.
We are shooting a Durga Puja sequence. It's like a homecoming of my character of Ron Sen, who is generally engrossed in work. It's a moment of soul searching for him as he comes back to his roots.



You have danced to Yaar bina chain kahan re for Main Aur Mr Riight. Tell us about the experience. Is it comparable to the original?
I don't know about comparisons. I was told it was supposed to be fun and cute, and it turned out to be fun. It was very hard work for me, because I was working days and nights.

How are you liking the dhoti? When did you wear one last?
I think I have worn one before, but not in recent memory. But I feel more like a Punjabi in it, than a Bengali!

Barun Sobti turns Bengali cricket agent in 22 YARDS Glamsham Editorial September 13, 2013

While his first film MAIN AUR MR. RIGHT is in the post production stage, actor Barun Sobti is gearing up for his second film titled 22 YARDS.


The movie is basically a comeback story of two people based on the backdrop of cricket and thus will have an insight of the cricket world. The working of the cricket biz will be revealed. Ron Sen played by Barun Sobti and Shome Ray played by Amartya Ray are the two characters who fight their way to sunshine. 

In India cricket is a religion which binds everyone. The movie will show the popular sport in a very different light. Cricket is not only about controversies as portrayed today. The film rather showcases the real, lived-in aspect of the industry. 

Barun will play a Bengali cricket agent in the film with ace actor Manoj Joshi as his rival. Barun is preparing hard for the movie and studying the culture of Kolkata. Mitali Ghosal, who herself has worked as a sports journalist for years has seen this world very closely, is directing the film. The first schedule of the film got over in Kolkata recently.

We caught a very tired and sleep deprived Barun Sobti on the sets of Mitali Ghoshal's 22 Yards in Kolkata. He speaks to us about the film and about 'Suzy' — as he calls his co-actor Suzanna Mukherjee

Do you hope to recreate the chemistry with Suzanna Mukherjee that you had with Sanaya Irani?
Of course, we have gotten along well so far and we are both putting in the hard work. As I had always said, it takes two people to work hard to create the chemistry.

How do you make each other comfortable?
Yaar, that is something you can't do deliberately. It's either a given or it's not. So it was a given luckily here.

Do you offer tips and advices to Suzanna?
She is very good. I don't think she needs any tips and advices. And for any help, the director (MitaliGhoshal) is there.

What are the common topics between you two in your free time?
Right now a lot over scenes and small talk



What was your first impression of Suzanna?
I am not a judgemental kind of person. But yes, I know her better now

What can we expect from the couple?
It's for the people to decide.

What made you say yes to the film?

The script got me hooked.

Did you have a say in having Suzanna chosen, considering you are involved in the project in every way?
I am not Brad Pitt, so I don't get to chose

The newcomer's innocent smile prompted director Mitali Ghoshal to cast her opposite the TV heartthrob

The cat is out of the bag. BarunSobti fans, who have long been speculating who their fave hero would romance on the big screen, can now rest their case. Newcomer SuzannaMukherjee has bagged the role in MitaliGhoshal's 22 Yards. The girl will start shooting from August 20 in Kolkata. 

"She plays a Bengali girl, Shonali, who is a sports journalist. Though I auditioned a lot of girls, what struck me about Suzanna was her innocent smile," said Mitali.

Suzanna was earlier part of Bolly flick TutiyaDil and her projects on the small screen includeRoadies, Roomie and Emotional Atyachaar. "Till the second round of the auditions, I didn't know about Barun. After hearing about him, I looked up the net and saw episodes ofIssPyaarKoKyaNaamDoon? He came across as very good-looking. Also, everybody in my family watches TV and knew who he was. I met Barun for a few workshops in Mumbai and liked his work. As a person, he is very simple. Despite being so popular, he isn't fussy," she said.

Though born to a Bengali father and a Ukrainian mother, Suzanna is nervous about playing a Bengali girl. "The character is very different from what I am in real life," said Suzanna."
