Exclusive- Barun Sobti talks about his films, Salman, John, Television TALKING MOVIEZ.COM December 8, 2014

Main Aur Mr Riight actor Barun Sobti in an exclusive interview with us spoke about the film, Salman Khan, John Abraham, his plans to venture back into television and lots more. Have a look-
1. The trailer of the film looks very interesting but again it looks similar to many romantic comedies which have come out from Bollywood. So what is one thing which makes Main Aur Mr Riight different from all other romantic comedies?
Barun-  My friends who have seen the promo have said the same thing i.e. it is a romantic comedy which we all have seen but it looks to be a fun ride. A romantic comedy has to revolve around love but what can be different are the comic scenes. So fresh approach to the film and the fact that director is just 24 years old makes the film different.
2. You play a Salman Khan fan in the film, so how much do you admire him in your real life?
Barun- You get to read about Salman Khan a lot in the news papers and whatever I have read apart from the mistakes happened, things which might have happened with him happens with all of us as we are all humans. I really admire him for the fact that he is very helpful to other people and the fact that he has taken the act of helping people to another level. I really admire people like him and I want to be like him. I love doing things for people and for that sense I will be very happy if I get to reach the position he is at now.
3. This is a romantic comedy, so which kind of films would love like to do in the future?
Barun- Yaar I love doing intense role. There is a film I am working on that is 22 yards and that is a very intense film. Such roles give you a lot of scope to perform without going wrong. Comedy is one of the most difficult genre as it is very difficult to make people laugh. In intense roles, it is okay if people don’t cry with you but you feel bad if people don’t laugh on your jokes. Personally I love doing intense roles.
4. Would you like to venture back into television?
Barun- I am not going to do any daily soaps. I will change my profession and will sell milk but I wont do any daily soaps. The reason is you can’t have new ideas everyday and there are enormous working hours. You become rain dead and there is no time for family. I think daily show is a strong no right now. It limits ones scope of acting.
5. Would you like to host a reality show?
Barun- I would like to do a weekly show something on the lines of Anil Kapoor’s 24 and I will still like to wait for that as Indian audience is still new to such kind of shows.
6. How different is it working in a film and on television?

Barun- Well it is very different. The producers while doing a television show give a stipulated budget beyond which the director cannot go and same is not the scenario with films. A directors vision on television is restricted so we can’t judge their talent. Everyone is different and has a different style of working. Films to have their own budget but that is fixed taking into consideration how much they are expecting the film to earn.
7. Bollywood directors like Ashutosh Gowariker and Sanjay Leela Bhansali are venturing into direction on television so would you like to work with them if give a chance to?
Barun – With all due respect, I don’t have anything against the daily shows but I don’t have the capacity to work in a daily show any more. Even if I do a daily show now forcefully, I will look for other options after a year. I have gone through a phase when I wanted not to do a daily show as I was too bored doing it.
8. What are your expectations from the film?
Barun- I don’t want to reach out to everyone but whomever I reach out to I want him to remember me.
9. Could you tell us about your next film with John Abraham Productions?
Barun- The film is in post production stage and it is in the final stages of the edit. We are preparing the final cut. I have seen some rushes and it is looking fantastic. The DOP has done a very good job, he is a national award winner. The writer and director too have done a very good job and actors are in a very good space in this film. The film looks good and it is a situational comedy. It is a ensemble film of 52 people. The film should be out in early next year.
10. How was it interacting with John Abraham?
Barun- John is not a kind of person who will give you tips. He is a very cool guy and he is more interested about serious topics or he is interested in jokes. He is a very nice guy and I have shot with him for one night and he is a nice guy.
11. Many actors in Bollywood believe in rewards than the awards and you yourself have won many awards for television, so what is your take on that?
Barun- I think the awards are very unfair. You can’t just choose one best guy as it is impossible. Awards can’t be based on objectivity but they have to be subjective. I wish there was a better way but we don’t have any other option

Barun Sobti: I am not easy to breakthrough to Glamsham Editorial December 3, 2014

Much like his character ‘Arnav', who is ruthless yet sophisticated, in popular daily soap ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon', Barun Sobti is not so easy to please with in real life too.

view BARUN SOBTI AT DESI DARU SONG LAUNCH event gallery

“I am not easy to breakthrough to. There is a protective shield that I have built psychologically. I am not open to everyone as I have been to ones those who have broken-through me. But once you breakthrough I will love anything that you do,” says Barun. But girls usually fall for guys, who are tough nut to crack. “I think girls love guys, who are not easy to please. It's like demand and supply concept. Lesser the supply more the demand is,” Barun agrees.

While in the daily soap Barun played a rich sophisticated lover boy nevertheless arrogant, in his upcoming film MAIN AUR MR. RIIGHT, he's playing a completely contrasting character. Barun plays a struggling actor in the film, who neither holds riches of the world nor is a perfect guy yet he has heart of gold. Ask Barun which character is closest rather which defines him and he says, “I connect to both of them. Having said that, I think playing a gareeb is much interesting. As people like knowing about underdogs. People like poor man sticking to his fundamentals and making it big.”
Also starring Shenaz Treasurywala, MAIN AUR MR. RIIGHT is all set to release on December 12, 2014.

Exclusive Interview: Barun Sobti On His Fitness Mantra MISSMALINI TEAM September 2, 2014

Barun Sobti

Barun Sobti
We at Team MissMalini recently had the exclusive opportunity to catch up with the ever charming (and heartthrob for many a ladies) Barun Sobti on his diet & fitness mantra. Read on to find out what Barun revealed to us about how he manages to maintain his enviably lean and toned frame.
Team MissMalini (Team MM): Would you say you are more dedicated to a strict fitness regimen or a diet regimen?
Barun Sobti (BS): Not really either!  I don’t really follow any strict diet regimen. I eat everything and still manage to stay healthy.  I do regularly workout though and follow a pretty regular lifestyle in general.
Team MM: Speaking of diet we have heard you say on many occasions – both while working on television and while shooting for the big screen – that you are a complete foodie and love to eat just about anything.  What is your secret to your fit frame?
BS: There is no secret. Really!!! Even after I eat just about anything I still do not put on weight.  It’s true that I am a real foodie but my body approves of it as well!!!  Haha!
Team MM: You have also said you are an ectomorph – do you ever find even then you have to cutback and keep a check on what you’re eating?
BS: I really don’t ever have to cutback on food!
Barun Sobti
Barun Sobti
Team MM: In terms of working out do you follow a pretty set regimen at the gym or do you find it more helpful to regularly switch up what your workout regimen consists of?  Who keeps you motivated or are you pretty self-motivated when it comes to hitting the gym?
BS: I am a very self-motivated person.  I don’t follow any fixed regimen however I do regularly workout and if a role requires some changes I change my workouts accordingly but nothing in terms of a fixed workout regimen.
Team MM: As an avid fútbol fan are you able to get out on the field and play regularly to incorporate that into your workout routine?
BS: I love playing football and I do play football whenever I get the time and opportunity. It’s not really part of my workout routine though.
Barun Sobti
Barun Sobti
Team MM: What is your take on the whole six pack abs fad that is huge with men on the big and small screen alike?
BS: I am not really too into six packs or any packs.  It’s really an individual choice so I really have no opinion on that whole thing.
Team MM: Is there someone amongst the current lot – actor and/or actress – that you find inspires your fitness habits?
BS: I think everyone these days is very fit so no one in particular inspires me.  All of the current lot are doing really good with respect to staying fit.
Team MM: Having worked on the small screen which is notorious for its long working hours were you able to manage a workout routine of some sort at the time [particularly when you shuffled between the movie and show shoot]? Has it become easier with the transition to a movie shoot schedule?
BS: No actually I never got time for anything during those days and especially shuffling between a movie and television schedule.  It started taking a toll on my health.  Yes definitely with a movie shoot schedule alone though it gives you the chance to schedule your life a little more.

Barun Sobti: I am ready to strip onscreen since I have a good body BOLLYWOODLIFE MG December 2, 2014

Barun Sobti: I am ready to strip onscreen since I have a good body

The dishy actor reveals why he really quit Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon, his upcoming movie Main Aur Mr Right, his real life story and more

Ever since Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon ended, I’ve been trying to get in touch with Barun Sobti – the charming, suave, intense actor that almost every girl I know drools over. He sat waiting patiently for me as I finally found the location and settled down to start my long series of questions. Dressed in beige pants and brown t-shirt, Barun looked cute as ever. Read excerpts of the interview…
Ever since you decided to quit television, your fans have been begging and some had even sent threatening letters to the channel to bring you back. Did you personally face any of this?
OMG! People threatening… that’s new. I think everyone should get the liberty of picking their own career. I understand that people want to see me back on TV but it’s only because of the kind of content I have been doing that people want to see me more. If I have someone else making that choice for me, the result would not have been the same.
Were you approached by anyone to change your mind regarding quitting the Star Plus show?
No. Whenever people meet me, they are usually excited to share their experiences and what they love about the character with me. They are happy to greet and pose for pictures with me.
Were you surprised to hear that Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon went off air after you announced your resignation?
I was in UK when I heard that they had decided to end the show. In fact, it was my mom who told me about it. According to my knowledge, they had roped in Viraf Patel to play a completely new lead in the show, he was not going to replace me; but guess that did not happen. I was on a vacation with my wife that’s when I came to know that the show ended.
It’s been two years since you left, what have you been doing all this while, besides shooting for Main Aur Mr Right, 22 Yards and Satra Ko Shaadi Hai?
Various things, but it is kinda personal.
Is it true that while you were waiting for the release of your films, you were offered television shows? Why did you refuse?
Yes I did get a lot of offers but I can’t take any names. A lot of people wanted me to do TV shows before the trailer came out. Offers never stopped pouring, a lot of people thought, ‘ki kuch nahi kar raha hai toh TV offer karte hai’. I do not remember what all scripts I received but I did get quite a few of them.
How did Main Aur Mr Riight happen to you?
Main Aur Mr Riight happened during Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon itself. These guys called me for the role, I met them, read the script and I liked it. I enacted a few part and they were happy with it. There was no deliberate shift from television to movies as people often keep saying. When I left the show, I didn’t even have any movies in my hand. I had shot for a few sequences, post which I was working for three months on television. I did not leave TV for films.
Several interviews post IPKKND suggest that you had health issues, what was that all about?
See firstly, I had a mental block ‘coz I was doing the same thing for two years every day for 12 hours. I had experienced that even during my previous show – Baat Hamari Pakki Hai where I worked a lot. There have been times when I’ve even worked every day for a month for an average of 17-18 hours a day. Whenever I took a show, I promised to only do it for one year but once you get into the routine it is hard to let go. With time I realised I was not growing anymore. Besides all this I had started losing a lot of weight, I lost my appetite and my health was not good. Plus I never got any time to spend with my wife.
But things in television have changed, right? According to the new regime actors are not allowed to work more than 12 hours in any show.
That depends on your star stature. There are people who would come and work for four hours and no one would tell them anything but poor actors like me, we’ve worked for 17-18 hours a day. For my first show Shraddha, I shot for 52 hours with a two hour break in between. I have done crazy amount of work when I was required to, but it got a little too much after my last show. All you are is your character, there’s no life beyond it.
Your film Main Aur Mr Right has been delayed over two years, would you know why?
The usual, it takes time to make a film, and if one thing does not go right changes a made, it’s re-shot, dubbed and sent for post production again.
But we heard that the film was delayed due to lack of distributors.
I have no idea about all that.
While I am sure all the three projects are very close to your heart, which one would you rate as your best work?
Main Aur Mr Right is a youth oriented film, Satra ko Shaadi Hai is a real life wedding scenario of a middle class family without any bling, and 22 Yards is a human story of a cricket agent. They are all very different and I can’t upset any producers by picking one, but I will answer your question. I was doing two characters at that time when Main Aur Mr Right came to me. It required me to put in enormous amount of energy but it was difficult ‘coz I had no energy left but I still had to do scenes , which in my head when I did them it was great, but my director would come back and tell me ‘Barun this is not close to how over the top I want you to be’. So in that terms it was difficult, I hope people like it. Comedy is a very difficult genre to do. When you are crying its okay if people don’t get emotional with you, but when you crack a joke it’s not fun when people don’t laugh. Satra Ko Shaadi Hai was difficult ‘coz I was playing a simple guy. It’s important to know when to perform and when not to. It was a delicate character who could get lost in the crowd also and it can stand out too. 22 Yards is an intense story inspired from real life events. So among the three of them Main Aur Mr Right was my best work.
What about Main Aur Mr Right drew you to it?
When I was deciding to do this movie, a lot of people asked me the same question. According to me, if you are good enough you do not need alibis to pick and choose something. I read the script and that was enough for me to pick the movie. I think we have committed with the promo that we are not making a thought provoking sci-fi movie. It is a very simple and light-hearted movie and that is the commitment in the promo. When you come out of the theatre you may not be smarter but you’ll be a happier person.
How would you rate your chemistry with Shenaz Tresurywala and Sapna Pabbi?
Shenaz and me we hit it off really well. She is a very chilled out person. The chemistry is fun rather than intense. There is a conflict of interest which is cute. As for Sapna Pabbi, I don’t have anything bad to say about her. Satra Ko Shaadi Hai is an ensemble of 53 people. She listens to me I listen to her, we are nice to each other. Sometimes I feel she is a little lost. She has been abroad for the longest time so she takes a while to get in the Indian way. I’ll rate my chemistry with Shenaz a 7.5 and with Sapna it is about 7, there’s not much of a difference. Just that Shenaz and I spent more time together.
We know about all your characters, but now we want to know about the real Barun Sobti.
How do you describe yourself? You should ask my wife this, I think she will be able to answer this better. I believe I am kiddish, but only with my wife. No one’s really comes across that side of me, people really think I am intense, sincere and arrogant basically because I don’t talk much. Yes, sometimes I have to be told things, but that would not be my family’s opinion. According to them I have to be told everything. But when it comes to work only I make those decisions.
Do you consult your wife and family before picking a role?
It’s a mutual thing. All kinds of opinions and viewpoints are exchanged, but ultimately I make my own mind.
Among all the kind of roles that exist, what do you personally prefer – the romantic dude, the angry brooding man or something else?
I like playing the intense character, ‘coz they are deep. I love characters with a subtext especially if they don’t talk much; that gives me an easier job to do. (laughs)
What are your expectations from Main Aur Mr Right?
I am anxious, but it’s difficult to spell out what I expect. It will be interesting to see how it is received. It will be exciting to see how much we pull in and how people react to it. If it doesn’t succeed then I would not know whom to blame. I don’t know the fandom that you are talking about really still exists or not. I know there are a lot who like me so I believe they will be generous enough to go and take a look at my work.
Who is your target audience?
We are trying to target all kinds of people. We believe all the younger crowd would watch this film and hope they take their families with them.
If Pashmeen Manchanda (wife) had to change you to become her Mr Right four years back, would you agree?
All of us change in our own sense. Change is the only constant thing in the world.
Let’s talk about your real life love story – how did you and Pashmeen meet, fall in love and get married?
It will be four years since we got married on the release date of Main Aur Mr Right. We met in school. She was going to drink water from the tap and I was staring at her. No one proposed actually, we graduated into love and then marriage. We’ve been together for the longest time; there was no scope of proposing. We studied together, and then she went to Australia for further studies for five years. If you go through a long distance relationship and survive it, then you can survive even death. When she came back everyone knew we were going to get married.
Has she ever stopped you from romancing women onscreen or told you not to get too close?
She will laugh if she hears this. Pashmeen has never had a problem with my work or the women I romance onscreen. Even if you show her my photograph with another woman, she will not believe it.
What’s the one thing you will never do in a Bollywood film – strip, sex sequences or suicide?
The only thing I will refrain from doing is something that doesn’t play well in my mind. I am ready to strip onscreen since I have a good body.
You’ve finished three films, the fate of which will decide your future in Bollywood. But in the meanwhile, will you consider coming back to TV?
Of course I would like to do TV. There are brilliant shows coming up. I don’t know if it’s the right time to do a show or not but I would love to be associated with a respectable TV show irrespective of how my films fare in the box office. I am ready to even put in my own money and do a show. I’d like to do something that comes out every year and be part of a series like that would be interesting enough. Look at American television, it is so big. I am crazy for American television – The Good Wife, Suits, Homeland and The Newsroom.
Are you worried about competition at all – from co-actors, other B-town celebs or anyone?
I am only worried about myself and my performance; nothing else matters.

Main Aur Mr Riight, Barun Sobti – Exclusive Interview – BRUNETTE DIARIES December 3, 2014

It’s 5 in the evening. Though December is supposed to be winter in India, in Mumbai it is just another hot month! I enter the venue, and take off my sunglasses as I head to the sofa. Cursorily, I happen to spot a fair guy with nice, shapely dark-black stubble. “Oh, Barun?” I exclaimed to myself. Even before I could seat myself, I am given the green signal to go ahead and interview Barun, one of India’s best looking TV stars, who is all set to debut in Hindi films with ‘Main Aur Mr. Riight’ (MAMR).
I look at him, as I head towards where he’s seated. He is wearing a nice, crisp pink-coloured shirt, sporting a clean stubble and has his hair ruffled. I sit next to him on the sofa. He smiles at me, and introduces himself. I too introduce myself and The Brunette Diaries, and tell him how I called for questions from all his fans on Twitter, and how within a span of only two hours, I received over a hundred emails from across the world, with several questions for him. He smiled at me, with a surprised expression. I knew he is curious to know what questions his fans have in store for him; so I wasted no time, and began with the interview soon enough.
'Sukhi' Barun Sobti with Shenaz Treasury in the film 'Main Aur Mr. Riight'
‘Sukhi’ Barun Sobti with Shenaz Treasury in the film ‘Main Aur Mr. Riight’
Which was the first scene you shot for ‘Main Aur Mr Riight’?
In the trailer you’ll see this scene where Sukhi is adjusting his hair with his spit! That one.
Were you nervous or excited before the shot?
I’m usually nervous while I’m shooting anything.
You had earlier said that you aren’t a great dancer. So how were your dance lessons for “Yaar Bina Chain Kahaan Re”?
Very difficult! There is this one step in the middle of the song, where … I can’t explain that step… but it took some 19 takes, yet I couldn’t get it right. So, it wasn’t easy.
So, eventually how did you manage it?
Eventually, I guess they zeroed in on the seventh or eighth take. But now it looks alright, as no one could spot it.
Which scene in MAMR is your favourite?
My favourite scene in MAMR (after some thinking, continued) is a scene which we shot near the lake side. In that, I am explaining to a friend why she needs to do that what I’m telling her to. I like that scene a lot.
You’ve said “Desi Munda” and “Khuda Khair” are your favourite songs in the film. Any particular reason?
Both of them are really good songs. “Desi Munda” is a catchy song, while “Khuda Khair” is a soulful track. I really like slow, romantic songs.
How was it working with (director) Adeeb Rais, co-star Shenaz Treasury and others in the gang?
It was very nice. And I hope the result is liked by the people.
Barun Sobti with Shenaz Treasurywala and director Adeeb Rais
Barun Sobti with Shenaz Treasurywala and director Adeeb Rais
Did they pull any prank on you?
No, no; not really.
What are your expectations from MAMR after its release?
I don’t know, yaar! Fingers crossed… hope it does well.
Will MAMR have an international release?
Well, we’re still planning it. As of now there’s no confirmation. We’ll have to wait for it to come out in India, and then we can check out.
What was your wife Pashmeen’s first reaction after watching the film’s trailer?
Oh, she loved it!
What were her first words?
If I remember correctly, “Wow! This is really good”. To this, I asked her, “So were you not expecting it?”
What was her reaction on seeing your character – the hair, the dressing sense?
It is meant to disgust people. She was like, “You’ve done a good job!”
Your movie is slated for release on 12th December, which happens to be your wedding anniversary.  Several of your fans remember it, and have wished you love for the anniversary and luck for your debut movie. So, what are your plans for 12th December?
Hmmm… private. I think I’m just gonna be with my wife.
Barun with his pretty wife, Pashmeen Manchanda
Barun with his pretty wife, Pashmeen Manchanda
New York, Mauritius, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Africa, and many other places – we’ve got mails from your fans inviting you to visit them. What do you have to say?
(Surprised, laughs) I can’t commit when; but I like to travel… so hopefully, some time!
After MAMR, what else do you have in your kitty?
I have shot another film with John Abraham Entertainment and UTV called ‘Satra Ko Shaadi Hai’. It’s coming out early next year. Then I’m also doing film called ‘22 Yards’.

While he answered my questions, I’d (for obvious reasons) look at him. This is when I couldn’t help but notice that he had no makeup on, yet his skin was fair and flawless, and his lips were pinker than his pink shirt. If you don’t believe me, check this image clicked immediately after the interview ;)
Barun SObti 9
Anyway, yesterday he spoke more about the movie and his wife Pashmeen’s reaction on the movie’s trailer. In today’s set, you’ll get to know more about his personal choices and beliefs.
So, let’s begin!
Any Punjabi quirk that you have?
I like to imitate Punjabi uncles et al , but that’s only in my very comfortable zone.
What are you most comfortable wearing?
T-shirt and a pair of jeans
3 grooming products you cannot do without?
There’s nothing I particularly use to groom! (Laughs. But after a bit of probing, he continued) I simply use a perfume to smell good, I use wax sometimes, and… what else… ummm, shampoo?
Barun Sobti 5
What are the qualities you liked in your real life Ms. Right, Pashmeen?
I think, the mere reason that I never had to list down qualities, and I had a brilliant time living with her. In fact, we keep on saying this to each other that it’s so much fun living with you.
You’re playing a Salman Khan fan in ‘Main Aur Mr Riight’. Which is your favourite film starring the actor?
‘Maine Pyaar Kiya’, ‘Tere Naam’ and ‘Phir Milenge’. And I have a memory of watching ‘Jab Pyaar Kisise Hota Hai’ and ‘Pyaar Kiya Toh Darna Kya’ together in Hyderabad… when they came out back-to-back.
The suave and hot-headed Arnav or the loud, wannabe Sukhi – which role was easier to play?
Nothing was easier. They both were very different. When I began playing Arnav, it was very difficult to pull off, and we had to do takes and takes and takes. My own character just didn’t match Arnav, because I’m not a sulky, prudent kind of a guy; I’m a simple, practical kind of a person. So, it was difficult. And because that happened, Sukhi became even more difficult, because I was still in that zone where I would just move my eyes and not say anything like my character in the serial, while Sukhi needed a lot of energy.
Barun Sobti 4
You’ve played diverse roles on TV till date, and now in this movie it’s something totally contrast. What kind of a person are you in real life?
I take time to get going, I think. But once the ice is broken, then I can be a little loud and irritating, in a fun way, of course! Majority of the people around me, love me! So…!
Would you do a negative role in a movie if you get an offer?
Ya, ya, ya… Depends on if I have a lot to do (in the film). Playing a negative character brings forth your real acting skills, I think.
Your inspiration in real life?
I can’t say anything right now. I just go with the flow.
Barun SObti 1
Do you read all fan tweets?
I’ll be honest… no; I don’t. Woh toh impossible hai to read all of themBut I do glance through them every now and then.
Will we be seeing you in endorsements?
Yes, of course! I don’t know when… but hopefully, soon!
Sobtians are so happy about your debut movie release. You want to say something to them?
I just want to say, be happy. Do go watch the film, and I hope everyone likes it.
